Okay, it's Monday, and I'm at work, and I can think of just too many places I would rather be right now. The thought of being at home, sleeping in my bed with no kids at home sounds pretty damn good right now!
Above photo is a picture of myself and my middle child, Andrew--who is about 5 in this photo. This photo was taken near the top of Monte Brasil (Mountain of Brazil), overlooking the city and port of Angra do Heroismo, on the island of Terceira, Azores. You may not know where that is, but if you find an Atlas, and look in the Atlantic Ocean area between the U.S. and Europe, you may catch a glimpse of a few dots (islands) out there above the Canary Islands.
Anyways, Terceira is where I would like to be right now; sitting in an open air cafe in the city under a moonlight warm summer evening, sipping my sweet Portuguese wine while listening to the music playing from the cobblestone town square. I'd be there with my husband, who has yet been to the island.
I have not been back to visit since 1999, when this picture was taken, but hopefully next summer. A few years ago, I was fortunate to visit Maui for the first time, and it was just beautiful there---the smell of the flowers reminded me of the Azores. If I can't make it back, then I'll go back to Hawaii---but I miss those little islands in the Atlantic so much..sob..sob.. So, here I will sit in my county office and dream.....
I also wish I was that tan again...geez..my legs are too white---pernas de galinha!!! (I have white chicken legs right now).

Lucky you, the only place I've been outside the USA is Mexico.
I had the pleasure of visiting in 2000, i loved the Azores they were beautiful and the shops off the little cobble stone roads in town were amazing. I even visited the castle with a special tour of one of the soldiers assigned to it. I think i miss it too! where did you stay on the islands?

Mike---
When I was last in Terceira, I stayed at my mother's house in Vila Nova. My mother is from the island, as well as my paternal grandparents, so---I have connections on both sides of my family. My father was in the U.S. military when he met my mom there. Were you in the military and stationed at Lajes?

GIRL YOU ARE BLESSED TO BE FROM THE ACORES. MY MOM'S FAMILY IS FROM THE ISLA DE SAO MIGUEL IN THE LOMBA DE POVACAO AREA! MY GRAMMA, BLESS HER, WENT BACK QUITE FREQUENTLY IN HER LATER YEARS, AND FROM YOUR PIC AND THE BOOKS I'VE RECENTLY GOTTEN, I'LL BE VISITIN' THIS YEAR. IF YOU LIKE MAUI, YOU SHOULD GO TO KUAUI THE NEXT TIME. EXACTLY LIKE THE ATLANTIC ISLANDS YOU YEARN AND PLENTY OF REAL LIVE CHICKENS LIVE WITH THEIR BABY CHICKS AND ROOSTERS TOO (of course) roam freely all over the island...bUT, TO TRULY ENJOY IT YOU MUST STAY AT LEAST A MINIMUM OF 7 DAYS...WHAT A RELAXING AND VERY PRIVATE ISLAND COMPARED TO THE OTHERS. NEXT TIME THERE, I'M GOING TO VISIT MOLOKAI, EVEN less people. A million angel blessings from you. I grew up in Taunton, MA Lotsa islanders there in the Weir Village and School St. area. Family names Marques & Eugenio. You take care of those beautiful babies! BE SAFE.
The Azores is a beautiful island getaway that has plenty of interesting culture and diversity enveloped in a romantic backdrop. I had the pleasure of living there for two years and it was wonderful.
Terceria had one of the top golf areas in the world. The countryside is magnificent and the towns are filled with warm people. Although thirty years behind us developmentaly, that is one of the great things about it. It's been about twelve years since I was there, but I still have fond memories.
Wow---it's a small world! Thanks for the wonderful comments--- I do disagree with the Azores being 30 years beyond developmentally----at the present time, things have really changed; but I don't think that is necessarily good. Most people now own two cars, and it is really difficult to find parking---and, everyone owns a cell phone---so it seems!! Please check the web under the Azores; and see how much it has changed--you may be suprised!
