Oh Boy!

Yes, I used to dress up like Boy George.  Yes, I was a member of the Culture Club Fan Club, and I would write Mr. George O'Dowd letters--none of which were returned I may add.  Oh well.  I thought he was cute!

My naive, innocent mind didn't think he was gay-just confused, and when I found out he really was gay, I didn't care either!  And yes, I was teased quite a bit because of it.  When my sister finally moved out of the room we shared all our lives, I took it upon myself to replace those hideous posters of the Bee Gees in those tight white satin pants I had to wake up and see each morning with cut outs of my favorite bands..  Thompson Twins, Culture Club, U2, Cyndi Lauper..etc..  I would cut them out like in paper dolls, and tape them to my wall in a collage.  This all came down when I was 19, after I met my ex-husband, and thought I "matured" and all grown up.  Yes, Boy and the band was part of my innocent, and naive teenage years.

Nowadays I'm reading a lot of negative stuff about Boy George, and yes, it is upsetting.  I'm really ticked off at him.  It's embarrassing really.  First it was the drug thingy, and "love triangle" with Jon that broke up the band, then it was more drugs, and then he finally gets busted, and is cleaning the streets of New York City, and now he is hiring a male escort (pathetic in itself-do you really have anyone to take photos of?) so he can take pictures of in "naughty" clothes, and shackles the guy to his bed post.  The guy luckily escapes in his underwear and is quoted saying:  "This is really ironic:  he sang that song, 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me,' and I really think he wanted to hurt me!"  Oh brother.

(No, I won't be sporting this look any time soon!)

I shared my embarrassment to my daughter who just didn't understand why I what so upset about it.  What would you do Lizzy if years from now, you hear that Jason Mraz, (one of her favorite singers) or all of the members of the Backstreet Boys (favorite band of her childhood) did something like this?  Wouldn't you feel almost betrayed somehow?  I think she understoond somewhat. Its like part of your childhood--someone in it; did something so stupid or someone you admired in some way made you feel ashamed that you did.

"You like Boy George? That coke head who dresses funny?  You used to dress up like him?"  I can hear the laughter already.

I used to dress up like Boy for Halloween, and for some parties I have been to.  It was always fun to do.  My husband hated Boy George, and it's a good thing he didn't know me back then.  Whenever he hears that song, "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" he always answers, "Yes!" to poor Boy.

Oh well, Boy, there is always hope you'll get back on track.  Just don't hang out with George Michael any time soon, okay?

When looking for these pictures in this entry I discoverd that Culture Club still has a fan club:  http://www.culture-club.co.uk/content/gallery_index.htm

it is a shame that drugs have taken away the promise of Boy George. I love his video where they are on that boat and singing. He is a total mess today.

Did you discover Culture Club still have a fan club, or were you really a member all the time?
