Down In Dixie

Weekend Assignment #76: Tell us something you love about or from the American South. From sweet tea to Lynyrd Skynyrd, William Faulkner to the French Quarter, whatever makes you heart long for southern skies belongs right here.

I've never been to Dixie, let alone the American South, so can't really make an educated comment---so I am adding pictures of what the South means to me--images that I automatically think of when I think of the SOUTH

Extra Credit:  Barbecue?  Gee, I dunno--but I hear that Texas really does it proper!

Lot of America's best music comes from the South.  There are too many artists in particular to mention...of course, my favorite Elvis is from there...  Here is one of my favorite songs that kind says it all:

Black Velvet

Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the victrola up high
Mama's dancing with baby on her shoulder
The Sun is setting like molasses in the sky.
The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything.
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for.

CHORUS:

Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please.

Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave
White lightning, bound to drive you wild.
Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl
"Love me tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true.

Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for.

CHORUS:

Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please.

Every word of every song that he sang was for you.
In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon,

What could you do?
CHORUS:

Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please.
Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please.

...If you please
If you please

I'm not entirely sure of this, but the girl who sings "Black Velvet" is Canadian.

Alannah Myles I think is Canadian; of course, I think she is an American wannabe..that is okay with me.  Alanis Morissette (love her) is Canadian who now has dual American citizenship!  It's all good... :)
