Mr. Silva

"Damn!  Why does he have to bring that awful old man to the graduation?!"

Mr. Silva is an older man who has been friends with my ex-husband for a number of years.  I briefly mentioned him earlier in a previous entry about my daughter's graduation.  I will confess to you, that I had no desire to see this man at my daughter's graduation, and I made it no secret to anyone the day before the graduation how I was not looking forward to sitting near him that day.  But, as of luck would have it, I not only saw him at the graduation, but actually spoke with him face to face; and you know what?  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  The anger and resentment I had for this man, kind of melted away once I found myself talking to him.

Here is the story about Mr. Silva..

My ex-husband met this man, when we were still married.  He would often come by to our home, and spend hours sitting in our living room chatting away, while drinking decaffeinated tea, which I would prepare for him.  He would chat away with the ex about a number of things; soccer, his secret to a healthy life (which included this particular tea that I found myself buying at the store especially for him), as well as his childhood, his immigration to the United States, his first marriage...etc...  To make a long story short, he and my ex-husband had a lot to talk about.  They both shared a love for soccer, and were both born in the Azores..etc...etc..  I would sit there on the couch at times with them, being the gracious hostess, and hear all about Mr. Silva and his stories of life.  He spoke candidly about his ex-wife, his affair with the teacher he met while working as a janitor at a high school, and all of his girlfriends.  He accredited his many list of girlfriends to his good health, and bright blue eyes--a real lady's man.

There were times I wanted to roll my eyes, and leave the room when Mr. Silva appeared at my door.  Okay, he had blue eyes, and he was Portuguese---I have a number of cousins who share this trait.  Big deal!  I had a birthday party for my son one year, and there was Mr. Silva there at the party surrounded by my two aunts.  My aunt made a comment about Mr. Silva's eyes.

"Oh, your blue eyes remind me of my father's eyes," remarked my Aunt Addie.

Oh please!  I thought to myself.... Please don't compare this man to my grandfather!  Needless to say, I am not kidding when I tell you that Mr. Silva couldn't get enough of the compliments, and I know he was flirting with both of my aunts right in front of me.  I wanted to hurl.

Well, it wasn't long until I learned that my ex-husband and Mr. Silva had even more things in common.  Both of them got internet girlfriends during the same time!  Isn't that special?!

During my divorce proceedings, I came up to the house to retrieve my son's bunk bed.  We had just sold the house, and both I and the ex were moving belongings into boxes.  Although I was grateful that I was not alone in the house with him at the time, I was not happy whatsoever to see Mr. Silva in my former kitchen, speaking on my kitchen phone, talking away with my ex-husband's married, Canadian internet-girlfriend.  There was no doubt it was her.  My ex purposively loudly announced her name to his friend, Mr. Silva that she was on the phone, and wanted to say hello...  Upon that moment, I thought of Mr. Silva as the scum of the Earth, as he took the phone gleefully and spoke away to "the other woman" (of many) in my presence.  I wanted to throw things at that point, but I felt so insulted and shocked at the same time, I proceeded to go upstairs and put all my frustration focused on unscrewing the bolts on the bunk bed.  Later I was joined by my brother, and a family friend who happened to work with my ex, who came up solely to apologize to me.

You would think that would be enough to dislike this man, Mr. Silva.  But, no...  It doesn't stop there..  When my ex "disappeared" and moved to New Jersey, without leaving an address or phone number, no child support, I knew he would relay this information to his good friend, Mr. Silva.  I called him, and of course, being the loyal friend that he was, refused to give me any sort of information about his whereabouts.  I reminded Mr. Silva that I had two children to care for, but he told me that he "didn't want to be involved"..  Click..

So, here I am, on a beautiful day in June at my daughter's graduation, and here comes Mr. Silva, looking a lot older, a lot smaller, saying hello with his little beatty blue eyes, under a large black fedora hat.  Yep..he reminded me of a grandfather I used to know, and I could not ignore him.  He came to congratulate me and my daughter, and went on to say that he was very proud of her.  He also asked me if he saw my ex-husband around.

"I had to go to the bathroom, and I asked him to wait for me, but he wasn't there when I came out!"

Eventually, I'm sure he found his partner in crime, (the ex).  I didn't stay to find out.  It was obvious that my ex wasn't interested in seeing me or meeting my husband, and was probably hiding out, and looking at us from a distance to avoid any confrontation between him and my mother in particular.

My daughter later told me that her father later had told her that Mr. Silva actually cried during the ceremony.  What?!  She couldn't understand it herself.  For a moment there, I actually felt sorry for this old guy, and I guess it was just time to forgive and forget.  It kind of made me feel bad for all the stuff I had said about him that day..  I guess it was God paying me back for all those bad feelings, and words I had spoken earlier that day.  Talk about Catholic guilt...  Bad, Julie...BAD!!

But, don't feel too sorry for Mr. Silva.  He is a happy man.  He has a new Vietnamese wife who is about 40 years his junior.  I'm sure she makes him a lot of decaffeinated tea, and keeps him happy.

Weekend Assignment #120: Searching for Pets

Weekend Assignment #120: Searching for Pets :

Weekend Assignment #120: Do a Web search on a pet's name and let us know some of the interesting things that pop up. It doesn't necessarily have to be a current pet -- if you've got a previous pet whose name will elicit more interesting Web results, by all means use that one instead.

Extra credit: Tell us an interesting name of a pet that wasn't your own.

We have one family cat, and his name is:  L.A.  His name is pronounced, simply, L.A.--like the city.  No, we don't live anywhere close to this big city--it's about 400 miles away from where we live.  We don't have any love for the city, other than the fact we go to Disneyland every other year...my kids just liked the sound of it, made up with the first letter of both of  their initials:--L for Lizzy, and A for Andrew.  I know, it is a bit odd.  I mean, we could have called him, "Al" for example, but we had a close neighbor, named "Al", and I didn't want to be calling out his name each time it was time for dinner.  "Kitty, kitty!  Al, come and eat!"  (Al was single, and was kind of smitten by me, and I didn't want him to get any ideas....if you know what I mean.)  We could have called the cat, "La, La" perhaps, but the kids didn't care too much for that one either.  So, our cat is just plain ole' L.A.!  At least it's original, hey?  I mean, it would be interesting to know if anyone else has a cat with the same name...

As you can imagine, there are many different sites on the web for L.A.!  Here are a few:

 <--downtown L.A.

Boston--Assigment #119

Weekend Assignment #119: Boston! Home of baked beans and the Red Sox. Share some of your favorite (or not so favorite) things about this quintessential New England metropolis. From the Big Dig to local Founding Fathers, it's all up for consideration. For the purpose of this Weekend Assignment, you can consider things near Boston as well (in Cambridge or other nearby cities).

Extra credit: Did you ever want to go to college at Harvard?

I’ve been to Boston a few times, mostly when I was a child once when I was 5, the other time when I was 9.  Both times, my father had driven us crosscountry from California to Taunton, MA.  The first time we stayed there, we stayed at my aunt’s home, the second time, we stayed at my father’s aunt’s house.  It is all pretty much kind of a blur, but this is what I remember about Boston:

I’m guessing that I’m 9, or 5 years old.  I remember being in a car with my parents, and a few other adults, and possibly a sibling.  We are driving along for a while, before I fall asleep.  When I wake up I find myself in an old fashioned looking part of town, down a particularly narrow road.  I remember cobblestone sidewalks, and little shops all in a row.  My mother was taking me there to buy a dress.  I still remember it—it was white with pastel colored flowers, and it had a white belt with flowers and tulips stitched on it.  I loved that dress.  I remember trying it on in the dressing room.  I don’t know what the dress was for-I think it was for a relative’s wedding.  Then, I remember walking on the cobblestone sidewalk, holding my mother’s hand.

The only other memory of Boston is the airport.  I remember seeing a mural of hokey players in the airport.  It reminded me of my cousins who lived in Taunton, MA—they all played street hockey in the summer.  I still have cousins that live there in Taunton—lots of them.   My father’s parents first home was Taunton, and I can still see the huge covered porches, hot summer nights, the sounds of crickets, and those bicycle rides to the corner store where we could buy ice cream, and those long ropes of bubble gum.  Lots of cemeteries in Taunton—far too many in my opinion.  Just too spooky for me.  Every corner you would turn you would find yet another cemetery!  My cousins used to pay hide and go seek there, but they stopped after the police found a criminal hiding from the law there one year.

Oh, and before I forget..  My cousins from there all speak like gangsters.  That accent just doesn’t go away.  I have cousins that lived there for 9 years, went back to Portugal, and they still have that accent.  It’s pretty amazing, like, even “WICKED COOL.”

There I am with the long hair sitting in the front with some of my cousins who have that really "funney" accent.  See my cousin Manny, the John Travolta lookalike next to my grandpa...  HA HA...  That's what cool looks like, or did anyway... :)  circa 1979--Azores

Extra Credit:  Harvard?!  Nooooo....  I was never interested in Harvard.  I have cousins who went to Brown, and I had a friend who went to Princeton with Brooke Shields.

My Holiday Weekend..

Wow...  It has been one busy weekend!  Yesterday I took a "mental day off" from work -- and the baby actually let me sleep in a little bit.  It was nice.  My kids asked me the night previous if I was going to go to work the next day, and I told them that I was.  Well, my intentions were good, but the bed was too soft and warm, and I couldn't resist sleeping in.  My kids woke up hours later, and were truly very happy to see me there still wearing my red pajamas in the living room, shouting at the TV as I sat there watching the World Cup game, France against Portugal.  Portugal, of course was robbed---over a stupid penalty...  Urrrrggh....  It was sad; but at least Portugal weren't balling their eyes out like England did when they lost.. Booohhhoooo!  I hope Italy wins the World Cup now--GO ITALIA!!!!

Anyhoo, all and all it was a nice 4th of July weekend..  (Pictures to come soon...)

Every 1st weekend of the month of July is the weekend of the Portuguese festival in my hometown.  Where I come from, there are only two official parades in the year that runs down downtown Santa Cruz; the Gay Pride Parade in June, and the Portuguese Parade in July...that's it..  There is a marching band, and of course the Star Bangled Banner is always played alongside the Portugal's anthem.  It really is a beautiful thing.  So I spent my Sunday celebrating my Portuguese/American roots with my family and ate the traditional "sopa e carne" meal which was started first by the queen of Portugal, Queen and Saint Isabella/Elizabeth, who turned bread into roses..  It was also my Dad's birthday, that day, and I knew if he were still alive, he would be right there eating sopas alongside of us--but he was there in spirit of course.  If you want to read more about the Feast of the Holy Spirit celebration we Portuguese people come to love,  click here:  http://www.tulane.edu/~latinlib/espirito.html    & here to learn of our Patron Queen:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_of_Portugal

The following Monday, I came to work which was pretty much a "nothing" day, because only a few of us were crazy to not to take the day off...  Tuesday, we had a small barbecue, and went out in search of our favorite place to watch fireworks; downtown San Jose, across from Discovery Park.  It was quite an adventure, since we got out too late and didn't make it until after the highway was closed.  All major highways and streets going downtown were blocked, so we ended up going through the back streets, often running into little neighborhood street parties displaying their own illegal firework display.

We finally made it to downtown, and although we couldn't get our usual spot, we got a spot pretty close--not bad for making it right before the fireworks display.  Of course Nicholas was a little scared when the display starting going, but I gave him a cookie, and it calmed him down.  It was a beautiful night, and despite the 1 hour wait in the parking lot afterwards, it was a nice family outing...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!!!

Portugal beats England in Overtime!!! WHOOOHHOO!!!!

I went grocery shopping this morning, but got to see the last 15 minutes of this game.  It was Portugal 0, England 0....in overtime; penalty kick time...

At the end, it was Portugal 3, England 1...  I'm screaming each time the ball is kicked in the goal.  My husband, who isn't a soccer (futebol) fan at all---he likes American football and NASCAR, is sitting there in disbelief, I'm sure.  He has never seen me excited for any sporting event whatsoever.  He continues to sit there shaking his head, while he watches the Portuguese team embrace eachother, kissing, and running hand and hand through the field, while the English team, some of them are so depressed, are sitting on the field in tears, balling their eyes out...  I try to explain to him that soccer is a passionate sport!  It is like a religion to some of these players... He just doesn't get it...  Too emotional for him..  Oh well...

This is a major day for Portuguese soccer..  It has been 40 years since they've reached the semi finals of the World Cup, and that means a lot!  I am sure there will be much celebrating until the wee hours of the morning in every Portuguese city town in the world tonight.  I'm so happy they won....  :)

Quando, Quando, Quando?

I heard this song last night, and it's so beautiful.  I LOVE this guy's voice.  Michael Buble....  He sings it with one of our favorite Azorean/Portuguese singers, Nelly Furtado, who happens to be Canadian too; just like Mr. Buble.  I want his latest CD.  I'm either going to buy it or have one of my kids burn it for me!!!  Listen to it!  It's beautiful!!

Michael Buble - Quando, Quando, Quando

 Lyrics (feat. Nelly Furtado)

Tell me when will you be mine
Tell me quando quando quando
We can share a love devine
Please don't make me wait again

When will you say yes to me
Tell me quando quando quando
You mean happiness to me
Oh my lover tell me when

Every moments a day
Every day seems a lifetime
Let me show you the way
To a joy beyond compare

I can't wait a moment more
Tell me quando quando quando
Say its me that you adore
And then darling tell me when

Every moments a day
Every day seems a lifetime
Let me show you the way
To a joy beyond compare

I can't wait a moment more
Tell me quando quando quando
Say its me that you adore
And then darling tell me when

Whoa lover tell me when
Oh darling tell me when
Oh come on tell me when
Yea tell me when

(Quando--means "when"...but you probably figured that out already...I hope..)

Michael Bublé séduit New York

Okay, I added this picture later today...  He looks a little like Elvis with a dash of Johnny Cash???  Sounds like Sinatra though!

You're Beautiful Parody

You may know that my family and I are fans of James Blunt and his song, "You're Beautiful".  My daughter and I actually saw him in San Francisco earlier this year at the Fillmore and watched him perform this song.  Little did we know that this song was going to be such a major success!  It's a nice song, and it's kind of addicting, but it's easy to sing to.  Often, when we are all in the car on our daily commute, we will all sing to it--even my youngest, Nicholas knows the words.

My older son Andrew burned a CD with this song, little did he know that there are two versions of it--the edited one that we hear on the radio, and the one one where James sings, he is "fu--ing high", instead of "flying high".  Unfortunately, my son unknowingly burned the song that was not edited.  Now, when I listen this CD I can do one of two things: try to sing over the naughty word and say FLYING, or lower the volume so my youngest doesn't hear it.  Sometimes, however--I forget...

Oh well, you know you have made it to the BIG TIME if you have a parody of your song.  I've found two for this particular song.  This one:     My Cubicle!    I don't know who exactly sings this one, but I got it from my favorite station:  http://todaysbestmix.com/home.php

And of course even Weird Al has one!  To hear "You're Pitiful", click there---->  here

I personally, like Weird Al's but, oh well, let me know what you think.

Is it just me, or does James Blunt's voice remind you of Andy Gibb too?
